The structure from a nineteenth century bronze foundry provided the starting point for this live-work complex on a tight urban site in Somerville, Massachusetts. About a third of the site was an enclosed building, while the remainder was surrounded by brick walls. The enclosed building was renovated with a new second level to create a living space, and a small steel-framed mezzanine was hung from the existing gantry crane structure. A new glazed conservatory on the south side creates an all-weather garden. At the opposite end of the site a new curved roof and glass wall enclosed the space formed by three existing brick walls, creating a studio. A garden of fruit trees fills in the ruins of the old foundry between the two spaces.
