This was the winning project in a limited competition for the design of forty units of low-cost housing in Hollywood, California. The combined design and development competition was organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art and the Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles in conjunction with their exhibition “Blueprints for Modern Living.” In developing the project for construction, we substantially reworked the competition design based on new development and regulatory criteria. The essential concept of dividing the project into groups of house-like units organized around courtyards guided the project throughout its evolution. The built project consists of three main courtyards which step down the sloping site, allowing views to the south and east. The units are designed as split-level townhouses, and each is entered directly from the courtyards or from the garden at the south edge of the project.
