The international competition sought ideas for the redevelopment of sixteen city blocks, bisected by a highway, at the edge of downtown Santiago. The extremely high density program included offices, retail, entertainment, hotels, markets and industrial space. Housing formed half of the program with related community facilities. The residential density was over 200 dwellings to the acre. The site formed the intersection between local and metropolitan systems, and the program juxtaposed a residential environment with the extension of downtown. The strategy adopted was to modify the movement grid to form four urban blocks (manzanas) with local pedestrian oriented streets bisecting these. Two building types were developed, interface buildings which mixed several uses in the same structure depending on the site context, and community spines which combined housing and community uses. The entry received an honorable mention.
